The power of movement

For a long time movement has been a forgotten hero of performance. Historically the emphasis in actor training was text analysis, acting techniques, the voice, finding the truth - but this truth was not often embodied.

Actors were not fully physically engaged, nor interesting, nor truthful when it came to their physicalisation of a character or moment. In addition many actors' own physical habits get in the way and these habits can seep into every character that they play.

Movement is such a powerful mode of expression but one that has been too long neglected and an area where performers feel bound. Even with exquisite technique in acting or dance there can be subtleties, details and nuances of movement that, when understood and embodied, can transform the impact of a performance.

Movement is everywhere and we have so much scope to become more embodied, and at one with ourselves and our characters if we take the time to work on moving and discovering our full range of motion and expression. It is a profound way to build confidence, to be well and to create the extraordinary.
