About Shapes in Motion: “ I was so impressed with the sense of community and joined as soon as the doors opened! Movement artists are often isolated as practitioners and so the ability to connect with others who understand my world is invaluable. .”

Who am I and what do I do?
I am a movement practitioner based in Scotland. I specialise in and teach ensemble theatre practice, movement to actors and solo movement theatre improvisation.
A little bit about my movement & performance passions:
All of the above! I love being in the studio, training, exploring, and learning with other artists. I am always on a course or teaching a course!
What I am currently working on:
I have several research projects on the go that explore improvisation as a performance practice. One is exploring methods of reflective practice in improvisation which I am doing in collaboration with Australian improviser Andrew Morrish. The other is about sharing a solo practice long distance which I am doing with Kate Hilder. My ensemble, which I run in Edinburgh, is an ongoing investigation into what it means to improvise and create together.
A little about my experience with Shapes in Motion and the Troupe
I discovered Shapes in Motion by accident one weekend when I spotted a workshop happening that day and signed up at the last minute. I was so impressed with the sense of community and joined as soon as the doors opened! Movement artists are often isolated as practitioners and so the ability to connect with others who understand my world is invaluable.
My dream job?
Any time I get to be in the studio with other artists who are engaged and invested in exploring ensemble of solo improvisation I am happy. A dream job would be one without any admin!
One of my creative highlights?
Developing the ensemble for the first time. I started with three people in an empty office space on Sunday nights, no real idea what I was doing beyond a desire to explore something together. There was a lot of stumbling about and some truly terrible work, but what emerged out of that time has changed my life and is the foundation of everything I do.
One of my creative challenges?
I would say the challenge has been to stick to my practice when those around me seemed to be completely uninterested and unimpressed! No one was interested in having me teach when I first started. It took years to build up a practice and then a reputation for that practice. It was hard at times not to feel a bit stupid, but something about the work kept pulling me forward.
Pearls of wisdom for an emerging performer?
The world needs artists. You are an artist. Therefore the world needs you and your work. Keep going.
Don’t forget to be gentle with yourself. It’s a tough industry in a tough world - keep kind!
Our history
Shapes in Motion has been moving professional performers since 2010 and has built up extremely strong industry connections with a multitude of creatives, movement practitioners, companies, facilitators and performers over the years.
In 2016 The MoCap Troupe was formed, a group of emerging MoCap performers, who are now nailing it within the MoCap industry!
In 2022 The Troupe expanded, inviting movers from all areas and movement specialisms beyond just Mocap. We nurture emerging talent as well as those with a mass of experience.
Our troupe coordinator
Our Troupe is coordinated by Movement Coach & Director and founder of Shapes in Motion Sarah Perry, who works closely with all our members to support, develop and help sustain our relevant skills. Sarah also works closely with directors, agents & casting directors to recommend performers for specific projects and productions.
