Who am I and what do I do?
I am an actor and mover based just outside London. I love all forms of performance, from stage to screen and back again. Having started as a martial artist before I was ten, I have taken my love for movement into all forms of my work.
A little bit about my movement & performance passions:
For a long time, movement was my language in a world where I was too shy to use my voice. I moved, danced and leaped into the rooms and relationships I have now, because of that passion. And eventually I realised the use of breath in movement would connect both my body and voice, in order to become an even better performer and more confident person too. Now I try to practice and share my love for the integrated body and voice whenever I can.
What I am currently working on:
After finishing our first work in progress of 'Galapagos' with the David Glass Ensemble earlier this year, I am now currently working towards the opening of my next show. 'Paper Swans' is a show drawing on the absurd and rooted in physical theatre and play. Coming to the Soho Theatre from April 28th - May 3rd. At the same time as all this, I am also starting to initially prepare for the role of Friar Laurence in Flabbergast Theatre's adaption of 'Romeo & Juliet' at Wilton's Music Hall this June. If I'm not currently on a project, I'm always aiming for what the future may bring!
A little about my experience with Shapes in Motion and the Troupe
Soon after my training I was looking for a place where I could learn more about motion and performance capture. Ten years later, here I am. I definitely learned what I first set out to. But from both Sarah and the incredibly talented, versatile and generous community she has built - I have learnt and continue to discover so many wonderful lessons and practices that have helped me become the performer I am today. Shapes in Motion is a place where I know I can always learn something new. And the Troupe are my partners in exploration.
My dream job?
At this exact moment in time, it's to be in a video game! I adore games with both silly and dramatic stories. I am aiming and working towards my first motion and performance capture role to portray a character that players can fall in love with (or be terrified by... That could be fun too.)
One of my creative highlights?
After so many roles over the last ten years and wonderful companies I've worked together with, it's always such a challenge to choose just one. But even if I've done bigger jobs, gone to more exotic places or been seen by bigger audiences - the most memorable role I've played up to this point has been, and may always be, Joesph Merrick in 'The Elephant Man.' Simply because it was an honour to portray such an innocent and enduring soul. It was my first professional job, so I'm sure I was both lacking technically and had (and still have) room to grow. But that's what made it so special. I felt like I had the whole world before me to explore.
One of my creative challenges?
I've spent so much time and effort in building my own style of movement. The problem with that of course is that I often find myself wearing the blinkers. Galloping headfirst into a process without taking the time to explore other routes, dynamics or styles, which can be a detriment. I love my way of moving and have confidence in it, but the challenge is to always further myself and to learn from others too.
Pearls of wisdom for an emerging performer?
Never forget your roots and foundations. Don't rush on building and sustaining them. Everything you've done before will lead you to the next step on your journey. And never forget those who were with you along the way.
When you get lost in both work and life, head back to the basics and speak to old friends. My old karate teacher used to use the old acronym - KISS - "Keep It Simple Stupid."
Pretty sure he was talking about how to win a fight - but applies to life and work just the same!
Our history
Shapes in Motion has been moving professional performers since 2010 and has built up extremely strong industry connections with a multitude of creatives, movement practitioners, companies, facilitators and performers over the years.
In 2016 The MoCap Troupe was formed, a group of emerging MoCap performers, who are now nailing it within the MoCap industry!
In 2022 The Troupe expanded, inviting movers from all areas and movement specialisms beyond just Mocap. We nurture emerging talent as well as those with a mass of experience.
Our troupe coordinator
Our Troupe is coordinated by Movement Coach & Director and founder of Shapes in Motion Sarah Perry, who works closely with all our members to support, develop and help sustain our relevant skills. Sarah also works closely with directors, agents & casting directors to recommend performers for specific projects and productions.
